Application Notes

Please note that in addition to these modules you will require either the NL900D or NL905 rack and power supply as well as, potentially, various cabling. We can help you with that as we develop the right system that works for you.

Signal Amplification

NeuroLog offers a variety of amplification modules that are used to make microelectrode recordings (intracellular or extracellular), EMG/EEG multichannel recordings, or for use with strain gauge or pressure transcuders.

Extracellular AC recording setup with spike discrimination and audio monitoring.

   Modules Used: NL100AK, NL104A, NL106, NL125, NL201, NL120S, NL985S

NL100RK – Record from and then electrically lesion your recording site without moving or disconnecting the electrode. 

   Modules Used: NL100RK, NL104A

Avoid grounding loops when when recording from more than one NL100AK AC preamp head stages. 

   Modules Used: NL100AK (2 or more)

Typical setup for intracellular (DC) recording. 

   Modules Used: NL102G, NL412, NL125, NL106, NL304, NL405 x 2


Four channel isolated amplifier setup with signal conditioning and filtering. 

   Modules Used: NL844, NL820A, NL135, NL144, NL530


NeuroLog setup for measuring physiologicial pressure.

Triggering Stimulation & Pulse Generation

If complex pulse protocols are required with full control over the timing characteristics here are some of the NeuroLog solutions. The pulses can trigger other equipment like electrical stimulators. See the electrical stimulation section for other pulse generation protocols that feature stimulation.

Triggering stimulation at a specific time after a planned number of pulses within a burst. 

   Modules Used: NL304, NL405 x 2, NL301, NL603

Controlling burst duration and repetition as well as output frequency and width with a set number of burst of pulses. 

   Modules Used: NL603 x 2, NL304, NL405, NL301

Controlling burst duration and repetition as well as output frequency and width with a regular burst of pulses.

   Modules Used: NL304, NL405, NL301

Stimulation triggering with a set time after EMG activity. 

   Modules Used: NL703, NL201, NL405

NeuroLog versatility with stimulation timing protocol – Set the number of trains, bursts in a train, and number of pulses in a burst.

   Modules Used: NL603 x 4, NL304 x 2, NL301, NL405

Controlling burst frequency, pulses/burst, pulse width and frequency in a regular burst of pulses.

   Modules Used: NL301, NL304, NL603, NL405

Signal Conditioning Filtering & Processing

NeuroLog offers modules for single and multi channel filters and signal conditioning to remove unnecessary frequencies and components from biological signals prior to their acquisition. Some of them can even be used to help with simply processing needs.

Connecting four filters between an isolation amplifier and a signal conditioner.

   Modules Used: NL820A, NL125 x 4, NL530

Incorporating an analog output to monitor instantaneous intervals between an irregular set of input pulses.

   Modules Used: NL304, NL601

Electrical Stimulation

NeuroLog offers a battery powered constant current stimulator which can be used in conjunction with other NeuroLog modules. Plus, the output pulses of the NeuroLog system can trigger other laboratory stimulators.

Simple stimulator circuit samples.

   Modules Used: NL800A, NL510A, NL512, NL405, NL301, NL304

How to use a single trigger pulse to produce two stimulus bursts from two stimulators with a variable delay between the bursts.

   Modules Used: NL405 x 3, NL301 x 2

Bi-phasic pulse generation of a defined duration burst. 

   Modules Used: NL301, NL405 x 2, NL506, NL510A, NL800A x 2

Generate an isolated biphasic voltage output using a biphasic analog waveform with two NL800 constant current stimulus isolators. 

   Modules Used: NL512, NL800A x 2

Produce pairs of pulses with interval control from a single trigger input (i.e. NL301 Pulse Generator) using a delay/width module and a logic gate module. 

   Modules Used: NL301, NL405, NL501
