In human neurophysiology and motor control research, precision electrical stimulation is essential. Whether investigating peripheral nerve excitability, mapping cortical outputs, or developing novel neurorehabilitation protocols, researchers require a constant current stimulator that is adaptable, safe, and easily integrated with automated experimental setups.

Enter the Digitimer DS8R Biphasic Constant Current Stimulator—a discrete-pulse stimulator designed specifically for demanding human research applications involving surface electrode stimulation.

1. Advanced Biphasic Charge-Balanced Output

A standout feature of the DS8R is its dual-mode capability, allowing researchers to choose between monophasic and biphasic rectangular pulses. While monophasic pulses are standard for basic stimulation, prolonged application can cause charge

accumulation, tissue polarization, and skin irritation. Biphasic, charge-balanced stimulation mitigates these risks by following the primary stimulus phase with a reverse-polarity recovery phase, preventing harmful electrochemical changes under the electrode site and significantly improving participant

comfort.

Adjustable Recovery Phase Ratio

The DS8R offers precise control over the stimulus-to-recovery phase ratio, adjustable from 10% to 100% in 1% increments:

 At 100% (Symmetric): Both phases share identical duration and amplitude.

 Below 100% (Asymmetric): The amplitude of the recovery phase is reduced while its duration is automatically extended, maintaining complete charge neutrality while optimizing physiological target activation.

Traditional stimulators require manual dial adjustments on the physical front panel between test trials. The DS8R removes this constraint, offering real-time, external parameter modulation during active stimulation protocols.

Software API Control (via USB)

Using the provided Windows software or API interface, researchers can adjust current amplitude and pulse duration dynamically using custom scripts in Python, MATLAB, CED Signal, or Spike2. This opens up possibilities for:

 Closed-loop stimulation paradigms.

 Automated threshold-tracking routines (e.g., QtracW).

 Psychophysical perception testing and automated pain research.

Analogue Voltage Control (0–10V Input)

For simpler DAQ integration (e.g., PowerLab or LabChart), the rear-panel BNC input allows proportional amplitude control. Applying a 0 to 10V signal scales the output current linearly from 0 to 1000mA on a trigger-by-trigger basis, eliminating the need for complex software drivers.

3. High-Frequency Firmware: Unlocking 10kHz TSCS Protocols

For neurorehabilitation researchers, Digitimer offers an optional 10kHz High-Frequency Firmware upgrade free of charge.Inspired by legacy "Russian Stimulation" concepts, high-frequency stimulation (such as Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation, or TSCS) is central to cutting-edge research in spinal cord injury (SCI) and stroke recovery.

Real-World Application: The eWALK Study

High-frequency TSCS passes through the cutaneous pain fibers (C-fibers) with minimal discomfort, penetrating deeper to excite motor networks within the spinal cord.

A prime example of this technology in action is the landmark eWALK clinical trial led by researchers at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA). The study utilizes the DS8R’s high-compliance voltage (400V) and high-frequency capabilities to deliver transcutaneous spinal stimulation in combination with step training, aiming to restore walking ability in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injuries.

Designed for Human Research Safety

Safety is paramount when working with human participants. The DS8R is built to rigorous safety standards, including high compliance voltage (400V) to deliver consistent constant-current pulses through high-resistance surface electrodes.

Safety & Regulatory Note: The maximum energy output of the DS8R is capped at 300mJ per pulse. Because this exceeds the 50mJ pulse energy threshold defined by international standards for clinical evoked-potential diagnostic devices, the DS8R is intended strictly for non-clinical human research applications and is not certified as a medical device.

Whether you are designing complex motor control paradigms, automated sensory threshold experiments, or high-frequency spinal rehabilitation protocols, the Digitimer DS8R delivers the power, flexibility, and precision required for scientific research.
